'Nuff Said

The flags are flying at half-mast outside the UBW offices as we mourn the loss of Stan Lee who passed away today at the age of 95. Words cannot express how much of an impact his work had on both Joseph and Mike.
We'll have something more to say about Stan The Man in a couple of days.

Rock the Vote!

Whether you leaned to the left or tilted to the right during today's elections here in the U.S., I think we can all agree that one of the most important votes took place 32 years ago.
...and for the record, Mike and Joseph both voted 'Yes'.

Sunday, October 28, 2018

On episode 39, Joseph surprises Mike by declaring that The Osmonds were influential on his becoming a hard rock fan. Here are two examples why.

Disco Baby?!?

Kiss is only visible for a couple of seconds, but in those couple of seconds you can sense the feeling of contempt at the proceedings.

"Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)"

Mike and Joseph make up for missing a new episode two weeks ago by giving you an extended (80 minutes!) look at one of the... er, "scariest" Halloween specials ever.
That's right... The Paul Lynde Halloween Special!

"Nostalgia is a lousy reporter who gets the facts and dates all wrong and isn't above total invention." --- legendary "San Francisco Chronicle" columnist Herb Caen, July 4, 1985. Mike and Joseph are doing their best to live up to Mr. Caen's definition!  ðŸ˜‰

Tuesday, October 16, 2018

These days you can slip into one of those inflatable T-Rex or Godzilla suits and play out your own daikaiju dreams.
But back in the day?
Back in the day, THIS is all we had.

If you were a kid in the 70s and owned a bike, or a Big Wheel, or, well, ANYTHING with wheels, you probably tried to be Evel Knievel at least once. And you probably injured yourself in the process.
But thanks to the Ben Cooper Company, at Halloween all you had to do was throw this sucker on and - WHAM! - you were America's Greatest Daredevil!
(the fact that the mask is dented in a few places in this photo adds a certain amount of ironic humor)

Trick or Treat?

In the time honored tradition of "trick or treat", we suffered a horrible TRICK this week and Mike and Joseph were unable to get a show together that met their high standards of excellence.
There WILL be a new show on October 25th and it WILL satisfyingly scary. In the meantime, go poke around whenitwascool.com and listen to some other shows. There's all sorts of Halloween goodness going on over there!

Saturday, October 6, 2018

It's October and that means it's time for tricks, treats and scary things.
Episode #39 drops this coming Thursday (Oct. 11!) and we promise that you will not want to miss it. Will it be a trick? A treat? Something scary? Maybe all three?!? Here's a hint - it involves witches and a fire-breathing demon!

Top 31 Horror Movies

Earlier this year (in the Summer), Mike compiled a bunch of data and arrived at the Top 31 Horror Movies of All Time (according to the Internet).
Check it out below:

Awhile back (early Summer) I did a little data collection project. I visited roughly 20 different websites (running the gamut from super-heavily visited to little traffic at all) that ranked at least 31 horror movies in a "Best/Greatest Horror Movies of All Time" list.

I took all the data and average out the numbers each movie placed on the different lists. I noticed that once movies got past around 50 there was a pretty wide variance of titles and the positions they were slotted (one list might have a movie at 56, another at 94, and so on). Since I was limiting my list to 31 (for the number of days in October), anything that didn't score low enough to meet that goal was simply given a 32. As an example, a movie's scores might have looked like this; 4,8,12,5,3,16,26,6,32,13,12,5 which would have resulted in an average ranking of 11.83.

With that all said, here is what I arrived at as The Internet's Top 31 Horror Movies of All Time:

31 - The Blair Witch Project
30 - Suspiria (77)
29 - The Evil Dead
28 - The Fly (86)
27 - It Follows
26 - The Innocents
25 - Poltergeist
24 - Carrie
23 - The Witch
22 - Pan's Labyrinth
21 - The Babadook
20 - Let the Right One In
19 - Dawn of the Dead (79)
18 - An American Werewolf in London
17 - Frankenstein
16 - Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
15 - Texas Chain Saw Massacre (74)
14 - The Cabin in the Woods
13 - The Thing (82)
12 - Scream
11 - A Nightmare on Elm Street
10 - Nosferatu
9(t) - Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn
9(t) - The Exorcist
8 - The Shining
7 - Jaws
6 - Bride of Frankenstein
5 - Night of the Living Dead
4 - Rosemary's Baby
3 - Halloween (78)
2 - Alien
1 - Psycho

There's a couple I wouldn't have put in there at all, a couple I would have added, and I would have had some movies in different places. So here's MY list of top 10, based only on movies from this list:

10 - Psycho
09 - The Blair Witch Project
08 - It Follows
07 - Poltergeist
06 - Dawn of the Dead (79)
05 - The Thing (82)
04 - A Nightmare on Elm Street
03 - Alien
02 - Jaws
01 - Halloween (78)

Happy October!

"All By Myself"

It took 72 weeks to happen, but happen it did: one of the guys had to miss an episode!
Which one was it? Well, if you follow Uphill Both Ways on Twitter (@UphillBoth) then you know - but if you don't, well - you'll just have to listen to episode #36 to find out. Heck, you should listen anyway! Actor, playwright, man about town, and Mego expert DC Cathro joins the "Lone Uphillian" for a talk about... Mego action figures, the coolest toys from the 1970s!

In the current episode, Joseph mentioned his secret crush - Marta Kristen - played a mermaid named Lorelai in the summer-themed movie, "Beach Blanket Bingo".
As a favor to Joe (and all of you listeners!), the Uphill Both Ways helper monkeys were able to find a couple of decent pictures showcasing 'Judy Robinson's' turn as a mermaid!

On the latest episode the guys talked briefly about a mobile game that Mike got Joseph hooked on - the
80s Mania Wrestling Returns game
It's a collectible (virtual) card game in which you accumulate cards of wrestlers, managers, specialty matches, arenas, and so on, and then book your own shows (one a week with four weeks in a month). The wrestlers are parodies of real wrestlers of the era as well as pop-culture-inspired characters (who may remind you of specific people!)
It's quite addictive, fun, and "Fans of pro wrestling booking games and business sims will love 8MWR! When playing, you’ll run your own 80s and 90s inspired wrestling promotion!"
Either check out their Facebook page (linked above) or the link below.

"Should I Stay or Should I Go?"

Summer's almost over, so Mike and Joseph figured why not discuss some favorite movies that happen during the summer!
Plus, the guys talk about a mobile game that Mike got Joseph hooked on, there's a couple rounds of 'Make Me Choose' and both of them have a new entries for their "Semi-Monthly Retro-Media Research Assignment" segment.
It's episode #35 - Should I Stay, Or Should I Go?

Tuesday, August 7, 2018

Here's something Mike put together. Not sure what we're going to use it for, but it looks cool so we wanted to share it.

"Junk Food Junkie"

It's time for a new episode! Joseph and Mike talk about a whole host of things this week. Be sure to give it a listen and remember to share the link to the episode - even if you don't have time to listen, maybe one of your friends will!

Thursday, July 12, 2018

Do you remember any of these places? Joseph and Mike talk about them and a few others in the latest episode.

"Alice's Restaurant"

Holy Toledo! In all of the excitement at the UBW offices, the helper monkeys had forgotten to post a link to the current episode here!
While we discuss job duties with the monkeys, please enjoy show #32 wherein Mike and Joseph introduce a new feature and then talk about restaurants from back in the day. It's an episode we could only call "Alice's Restaurant".

Tuesday, June 26, 2018

This product is a divisive one at Uphill Both Ways headquarters. One co-host likes them a lot, the other can't stand them. What do you think of circus peanuts candy?

Saturday, June 23, 2018

"Fame"

In episode #31, the guys share memories of meeting celebrities and try to define what it means to actually "meet" one. The wind the show up with a few rounds of "Make Me Choose" and both Joseph and Mike have a hard time making a decision on a couple of them.
Give it a listen!

Sunday, June 10, 2018

Lunar Lander - quite possibly one of the most frustrating quarter-eating games of the golden age of arcade games.
Hear Mike and Joseph's thoughts about it, and other games, in episode #30 of Uphill Both Ways.

Thursday, June 7, 2018

"Pinball Wizard"

Get those quarters ready, it's time to head back to the arcades of the 70s and 80s and discuss favorite pinball and video games!

"Sunday Papers"

Mike has a spring cold and Joseph is running on fumes after attending nine film festivals and seventeen concerts in three days. That's the only to explain the snarkiness that creeps into their discussion about Sunday Comics and a select few that don't make the grade in their eyes.
It's episode #29 and you can listen right here!

Thursday, May 10, 2018

"Space Age Love Song"

There may be a show on Netflix called "Lost in Space", but to Joseph and Mike there is only one, TRUE show by that name. Anything else just does not compute.

Tuesday, May 8, 2018

If you haven't listened to it yet, it's not too late - check out episode 27 of Uphill Both Ways and find out why Mike's bedroom walls looked like this back in the 80s.

Thursday, April 26, 2018

"Purple Rain"

It's been a little more than two years since the world lost one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time, so Mike and Joseph decided to pay tribute to him in episode #27.
We probably don't need to say who this person is - a glance at the accompanying image should say all you need to know.

"Don't Fear the Reaper"

This episode sees Joseph go hog wild during the "What Have You Been Up To?" segment and then no sooner do the boys hit the weekly topic when Mike steers it almost totally off the rails. All of which proves that working without a script or a safety net can result in some interesting conversations.

An Important Show Update

The past couple of episodes the fellas have mentioned that they were going to roll in a few minor changes to the show with the start of year two and today marks the first of those changes. Gone are all topics involving or related to the 1970s and 1980s. Instead, all subject matter will be pulled from the 1990s.
"[The 90s are] still last century, so it's retro," said Mike. "let's face it - the 70s and 80s weren't really as cool as we make them out to be. By going to the 90s Joe and I can talk cell phones, the early days of the Internet and cartoons like Angry Beavers and CatDog."
"Honestly, the 90s wasn't our first choice," added Joseph. "I wanted to do the 50s, but Mike pointed out that we weren't even alive yet so we wouldn't have any memories to talk about."
On the current episode of Uphill Both Ways, Joseph gives his highest recommendations to the Portland, Oregon band Daydream Machine. Here's the title track to the band's second album, "The Show Must Not Go On."

Friday, March 30, 2018

"Welcome Back"

The fellas slow things down a little in this "transition" episode between the end of year one and the start of year two. While there is some retro pop-culture ramblings, the bulk of the show is dedicated to the return of "Joltin'" Joseph Perry to the United States after a decade living abroad in South Korea.

Saturday, March 17, 2018

"The Time Warp"

We're one!
That's right - Uphill Both Ways has been mining retro pop culture memories for a full year and we're just get started!
But before Joseph and Mike roll into year two, let's take a moment to look back at 10 listener-suggested bits from the first year of UBW.
Yep, in the time-honored sitcom tradition, we're doing a clipshow!

Monday, March 5, 2018

There's something familiar about this monster from Ultraman, but we just can't put our finger on it.
Maybe Mike and Joseph know who it might be! Find out in the latest episode of Uphill Both Ways!
