Happy Thanksgiving to all of our listeners in the U.S.! The guys have a larger than usual episode to go along with your larger than usual servings of turkey dinner as they discuss some music that they are thankful for, specifically their favorite albums. Some of it's pretty middle of the road, top 40 stuff (Mike, we're looking at you) and some of it is a bit more varied (Yo, Joe!), but all of it is top of the charts for them. But first, kicking things off, is Joseph answering the SLP VHS Dub Tape Challenge of "Cover Ups and Conspiracies". While Joe is busy spending his Summer break waiting to get his second Covid vaccine shot, the guys weren't able to schedule any time to record, so Mike has put together the next best thing: A clip show! Each installment Mike will look back to the decade of decadence and provide a list of eight things – from movies to music to memorable moments and everything in-between.  Keep in mind, this isn’t a TOP 8 list and any numerical notations are included to merely designate one item from another. Because, frankly, how can rate one thing over another when it came from a decade as totally tubular as the 80s?

Psychedelic Furs

Starting in 1977, the Psychedelic Furs were at the forefront of the New Wave genre.  Despite being successful in their native U.K. and getting airplay on college radio stations through the early 80s, it wasn’t until their re-recorded ‘Pretty in Pink’ was featured in the John Hughes film of the same name in 1986 that they shot to the mainstream.

FTV - More!

Here's another partial episode of the long-lost FTV syndicated comedy-parody-sketch show.

This one is a bit unfortunate because it cuts off right in the middle of the skit with Dokken.  But still you can get a feel for what this show was (and what it was wasn't too good).

FTV

Back in 1985 there was a short lived, syndicated TV show called "FTV".  To some, memories of this may invoke feelings of the "Mandela Effect" - the distinct memory of something that didn't really exist.  However, in this case those memories are real and Joseph and Mike have briefly talked about it on the show.  Though details of this MTV parody, sketch-comedy show are scarce (for now!), some clips have been unearthed.  The quality ranges from practically unwatchable to "this is a VHS-rip, right?", but it's all there is.

Hopefully one day this stuff will be unearthed in a more watchable format, but for now - dig on this:

As the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic begin to fall into place, Mike and Joseph run down Joe's Mix Tape Challenge about robots and then it's off to the main topic of songs that were bigger hits than the movie that they were written for. Sure, "Xanadu" by Olivia Newton John springs to mind, but what else could there be? You might be surprised by some of the tunes that fit the bill. And of course the guys go off on their usual tangents just like you'd expect a couple of old men to do. So hit play, sit back and enjoy another trip back to the groovin' 70s and totally rad 80s!
